Network such as Google or Yahoo gets malware added to a ad. More and more instances of "malvertising" going on where a big ad I agree Simon, I have been doing the same for years. Even Mac users are waking up to the fact that they aren't bullet proof after all. but if you're wary and careful then there's less of a problem. If you open any old email with attachments or unwarily click on buttons on sites that install Trojans, Keyloggers and Worms then no protection in the world will protect you forever and MSE possibly least of all. It's really down to what you do out in the interwebby world.

MSE (and Defender) doesn't necessarily fare well compared to other packages in lab tests (which are very stringent anyway) but combined with a Malware checker like Malwarebytes then it will do the job for many (but then you're running two packages to do the job and using more resource). If someone's been burned in the past then they tend to be wary of any package unless it can prove itself (for example, I personally swear by Kaspersky Internet Security for all my devices and my partner's, but others have their own preference - you pays your money, etc).

I think it's down to previous experience and risk.
